History

The site has been in use as an agrochemical manufacturing facility from the early 1940s, originally owned by Fisons and latterly by Bayer Crop Science.

The is designated as a Part IIa Special Site under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and as such there is a requirement for the site to be remediated.

As with any corporately responsible/sociably aware company, it was extremely important to Bayer Crop Science that the successful bidder for the site had both the ability, expertise and financial standing in order to safely deal with the contamination issues and bring the site back into use within the community.

Approach

Harrow’s approach has been to investigate and evaluate a series of detailed site investigations leading to the development of a remedial strategy. This has been achieved by the early engagement and involvement of leading environmental consultants and specialist remediation contractors and in close consultation with South Cambridgeshire District Council and the Environment Agency.

The proposals for remediation and subsequent redevelopment upon validation have been the subject of consultation with the local community for a number of years and all statutory consultees. Planning consents were granted in early 2010 for both the remediation and subsequent redevelopment of the site for residential and commercial use following validation of the remediation works.

Status

Demolition works were completed in June 2008 and remediation commenced in Spring 2010. The works are being undertaken by a specialist remediation contractor, Vertase FLI and independently monitored by a specialist environmental consultant Atkins PLC, working with Harrow’s in-house team.

Close liaison and monitoring is undertaken by the Environment Agency in conjunction with the Environmental Health Department at South Cambridgeshire District Council.

The remediation phase is likely to take a period of 18 months followed by a monitoring period prior to validation.
