History
Originally owned by Total Fina Elf, historically the site has been occupied by various industrial activities since the 1800s, including heavy engineering works, chemical works and more recently a rubber works.
Approach
Aware of the historic environmental liability, Total Fina Elf commenced a series of investigations to determine the extent of this legacy prior to marketing the site for disposal.
It was extremely important to Total Fina Elf that the successful bidder had the ability, expertise and financial standing to result in both a safe transfer of environmental liability and also be capable of bringing the site back into use within the community.
Through an informal tender process, Harrow Estates was chosen as the successful party to acquire the site.
Upon acquisition, assessments were carried out with regard to the redevelopment potential of the site in order to bring it back into use within the community.
Status
Baseline assessments have been carried out with regard to the proposed residential use of the site and subsequently a residential planning application has been submitted to the local authority for their consideration.
Site investigation has indicated that contamination is present locally in the form of heavy metals mainly due to the coal mining history but also in the form of solvents once stored at the site.
The site has been demolished and all sub-structures removed. Remediation work is to commence once planning consent has been obtained.
