During April and May 2009, Harrow Estates plc undertook the demolition of all remaining buildings, removal of hardstanding, foundations and remediation to an area impacted by hydrocarbons.
The work was undertaken within a very short time period to prepare the site for future redevelopment for residential use.
Following completion of the groundwater monitoring, the Environment Agency have confirmed that the site no longer poses a significant risk to groundwater. After two years of a complex remediation and a further year monitoring the groundwater, we have been able to successfully demonstrate that the remediation has made a significant benefit to the local enviroinment and the legacy left behind by decades of chemical manufacture has gone for good.

Cadishead was a former Tar Distillery and Processing plant covering a site area of 6.5Ha with a long history of chemical contamination. The site has planning permission for residential use.
Harrow Estates is shortlisted for ‘Best use of a combination of remediation techniques’ in the 2008 Brownfield Briefing Awards
Harrow Estates was delighted to be shortlisted for its entry in the category ‘Best use of a combination of remediation techniques’ at the prestigious 2008 Brownfield Briefing Awards, held on Tuesday 16th September in London.
The joint submission was made with project partners Wardell Armstrong and Vertase FLI and featured the remediation works carried out on a 6.5ha former chemical and tar distillation works in Cadishead, Salford. The site had a long history of contamination and is situated in a densely populated area.
A record number of entries were received for this year’s awards and the Cadishead site was one of only three shortlisted for the category which was won in the end by the Olympic Delivery Authority.
