Harrow Estates Host Public “Drop-in” Session For Local Residents
Harrow Estates plc, together with their contractor VertaseFLI, consultant Atkins Plc, the Environment Agency, South Cambridgeshire District Council, the Health Protection Agency and NHS Cambridgeshire hosted a “Drop-In Session” for the local community on the evening of 25th May 2011 at Hauxton Village Hall.
The Drop- in Session was held to keep local residents informed of progress and future works in relation to the remediation works being undertaken at the former Bayer CropScience Site at Hauxton.
Local residents were able to review updated boards showing the progress of the works over the last 12 months and outlining proposals for the ongoing works scheduled for completion in the Autumn 2011.
Representatives from each organization were on hand to discuss any concerns local residents may have regarding the ongoing works. The event was well attended and felt to have been beneficial to the local community.
History of the site
The site historically produced agrochemicals including pesticides and herbicides since the 1940s. Contamination has been caused on the site through historical leaks, spillages and disposal
Following investigations by South Cambridgeshire District Council the site was determined as contaminated land in 2003 under Part IIa of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and designated as a “Special Site” for regulation by the Environment Agency.
The site was sold by Bayer in late 2005 and is managed by Harrow Estates plc. Harrow Estates plc undertook a public consultation in 2006 prior to submitting planning applications for the remediation work and for the future redevelopment of the site.
Planning was consented in February 2010 for the remediation and redevelopment of the site.
