Harrow Estates is shortlisted for ‘Best use of a combination of remediation techniques’ in the 2008 Brownfield Briefing Awards
Harrow Estates was delighted to be shortlisted for its entry in the category ‘Best use of a combination of remediation techniques’ at the prestigious 2008 Brownfield Briefing Awards, held on Tuesday 16th September in London.
The joint submission was made with project partners Wardell Armstrong and Vertase FLI and featured the remediation works carried out on a 6.5ha former chemical and tar distillation works in Cadishead, Salford. The site had a long history of contamination and is situated in a densely populated area.
A record number of entries were received for this year’s awards and the Cadishead site was one of only three shortlisted for the category which was won in the end by the Olympic Delivery Authority.
Building on the successful planning consent for 350 dwellings on the former Clariant Site at Cadishead in Salford, Harrow Estates is pleased to announce it has secured a resolution to grant planning permission for the development of an additional 42 dwellings on an adjoining area of land. This brings the total site capacity to 392 dwellings on the 17 acre site.
Mike Riding MD of Harrow Estates said: “In buying more land at Cadishead we have been able to make an important addition to our existing proposals. This will now enable us to bring forward a larger site for comprehensive residential development enabling the regeneration of a prominent former industrial area along the Manchester Ship Canal.”
Engineering operations to prepare the site for development are nearing completion and in due course the land will be marketed for sale.

Harrow Estates plc has been granted outline planning permission by Manchester City Council for the development of a 44 acre (17.58 ha) site in Openshaw West, east Manchester. To be known as Dreyfus Village, the residential-led scheme, predominately designed for families, will encompass 1,100 residential units and approximately 8,000 sq ft (743 sq m) of commercial space, including offices, retail and leisure facilities with a communal space and events area at its heart.
Urban regeneration company, New East Manchester will now work with regeneration specialists, Harrow Estates, and architects Taylor Young in partnership with the local community, to develop the masterplan.
The brownfield site, acquired by Harrow Estates following a competitive bidding process, was last occupied by CIBA and has been in use for chemical production since the 1870s. It falls within the New East Manchester regeneration area and Harrow Estates has been working closely with New East Manchester and other key stakeholders to develop a technical and design response that encompasses environmental statements, including water resources and flood risk assessment, as well as social and economic impact, archaeological and historic assessments, planning policy, design and access, transport, ecology, noise and air quality.
