Globe Road - Leeds

Harrow acquired the 5.58 acre former Iron Foundry near Leeds city centre in 2003 in a matter of days with simultaneous exchange and completion.

The site is situated adjacent to the River Aire, the Leeds-Liverpool canal and the principal railway line into the city. Despite its long industrial use, little technical information was available and during due diligence Harrow relied entirely upon its in-house team assessments.

  • Residential development was initially opposed by Leeds City Council, however a series of robust planning assessments and a high quality approach to design won the day.
  • Planning was secured for 836 residential units including 125 affordable, 35,000 sqft retail space and 711 car spaces. The scheme had a total of 738,000 sqft.
  • The site was subsequently sold to George Wimpey City Living for development in 2006.
  • Extensive liaison with Council officers, elected members and interested parties.
  • A RIBA design competition to find a creative scheme which reflected our desire to deliver a high quality regeneration proposal.
  • Residential accommodation was designed by Assael Architecture in 5 blocks including a 30 storey tower making best use of the views and shape of this city centre site.
