Wheatley Chase - Halifax

A relic from the industrial revolution, the Forest Mill / Sykes Mill had a rich manufacturing heritage dating back to Victorian times. The mill buildings occupied approximately half of the site, complete with an original large brick chimney and back filled reservoirs.

Harrow Estates acquired the site in July 2005, as a short term investment when the mill buildings were still in use as a manufacturing facility but subsequently became available following the collapse of the tenant business.

Proposals for residential redevelopment of this 7 acre site were initially opposed by the local authority - however Harrow Estates produced a compelling evidence base and high quality residential proposals which gained the support of the local community and subsequently the Council.

• Planning consent was achieved for 112 units with a Section 106 Agreement reflective of the technical challenges on site.
• Removal of all sub-structures and redundant infrastructure.
• Demolition of above ground structures.
• The new residential site includes a green corridor and new cycle / pedestrian links to connect the development to existing adjacent facilities.
• Consideration of the redundant rail tunnel that crosses the site.
• Decommissioning the original buildings and asbestos removal.
• Appointment of a specialist Remediation Contractor to remove contamination.
