Marple - Cheshire

The former Calico Print Works on the bank of the River Goyt not only provided the usual remediation challenges for Harrow Estates, but presented the logistical challenge of providing for the relocation of existing tenants within the mill during significant engineering works.

Located in the Greenbelt and possibly at risk from flooding from the River Goyt, extensive planning assessments were undertaken to promote residential development. Rejected by the Council and appealed, Harrow Estates engaged in detail with a local residents group to bring forward a high quality residential development which won the support of all groups and bodies.

The mill consisted of mainly a single storey brick built northern light building with associated settlement tanks, water treatment plant and a large chimney each of which required careful consideration. The works included:

  • Decommissioning and extensive asbestos removal.
  • Demolition of above ground structures and removal of all sub-structures and redundant infrastructure.
  • Treatment of contamination ‘Hot Spots’ by a specialist remediation contractor.
  • The site was remodelled to mitigate flood risk and to form a residential development platform which was subsequently sold to Stewart Milne with planning permission for 76 homes.
  • Harrow Estates built and delivered two new commercial units for the former tenants of the mill building.
